The Charles House -  Monhegan Island Maine

I hope you come visit the island, it's a very special place... and please consider renting this home to stay with your family and friends.  I consider it a little piece of heaven on earth, and love to share it with others.  Many Ammenties you won't find in most cottages on the island, and in a private location.

Full Two story house with 4 bedrooms, 1 large bathroom

Come stay in an islander's home this summer!

A resident of Monhegan for over 30 years, my house was built in 1995.  During the summer, I move to a smaller place on the island and rent out my beautiful two story house to help with costs.  The house offers many of the ammenities you would expect at your own home; Linens and towels are provided, a stocked kitchen with lots of room to cook, wi fi, dvds, art on the walls, plants in the corners, books, puzzles, games, wi-fi, It's a lovely and peaceful place to stay, whether traveling as a couple or part of a family group. Note: The house is located at the top of Horn's Hill, in a quiet and private location on Monhegan, it's not located on the water, but it does have water views from upstairs.

Kitchen, door onto front Deck
My kitchen and living-room are connected, with a door to the deck located between them. My cabinets are birch and filled with dishes, pots, pans and anything you'd need to cook up a fine meal!  The table in the picture is set for four, but there are two leaves that will extend to fit more people.  The cook stove is run with propane gas, it's very user friendly, with a fan/light overhead. The door opens onto a large deck that faces west, and there is a lovely private yard with flowers and deck-chairs to enjoy.  We have very few insects on the island, especially at the top of the hill, so it's easy to leave the door open on beautiful days and let the breeze blow through the house!
Kitchen with Natural wood cabinets

Another view of the kitchen, with a pantry on the left with cupboards and drawers.   We have a wonderful recycling program on the island, so trash can be easily sorted within the appropriate cupboard. The fridge is a small propane refrigerator that works very efficiently and fits a lot more into it than you think it will.  I leave plenty of newly made ice in the freezer for you!

Downstairs livingroom, off Kitchen, door to deck

The Living room is open to the kitchen (picture above) - the door to the deck is beside the couch.  The couch and chair set are new this year, and the chair is a swivel rocker and they are so comfortable!  There is a media cart on the other side of the couch with a TV, DVD, and lots of animated movies for kids, some music videos and a couple of family movies.  My antenna only reaches the local channels, and is not set up with dish-network services.  However, if you bring a computer, the wi-fi connection at the house is excellent and you can watch movies using that connection.

Upstairs Bedroom, windows facing North and East
There are four bedrooms in the house - three upstairs and one downstairs: three have double beds, one has a king.  This picture is of one of the upstairs bedrooms, with a double bed, located in the northeast corner of the house.  You can see absolutely gorgeous sunrises over the cliffs (Burnthead) out the window facing East, and a fabulous view of the entire Lighthouse and keeper's house out the North facing window.  There are bureaus in each room, as well as hanging garment racks.  There are handmade quilts on each bed and sofa.
Upstairs Large Bedroom with King bed

This is the largest bedroom upstairs, with a king sized bed.  There are lots of books along the wall, many (200+) are books about art techniques and famous artists from my mom's collection over 40 years!  There are gardening books, lots of 'coffee table' books, books/magazines about birds, and lots of children's books.  There is a great view of the lighthouse from the north facing window.

The opposite side of this large room (pictured below) offers another upstairs living/sitting room with a couch and a closet full of puzzles, games, toys, books, magazines and more! This room is located at the top of the stairs and you must enter this room to access the doors to the other two upstairs bedrooms.

Upstairs Sitting Area in Large Bedroom, with game closet

This is the opposite side of the Upstairs large bedroom.  It is a sitting area with lots of books, magazines, and the cabinet has games, toys, puzzles and things to do if you happen to visit when there is inclement weather!

The rocking chair is in the center of the room in front of a large window that looks out over the water and the neighboring island Manana.  You can view some amazing sunsets from this West facing window, as well as several lighthouses glowing along the Maine shoreline.

Very small bedroom upstairs, window faces South
This is a very small bedroom in the Southwest corner of the upstairs.  The full bed is brand new and very comfortable!  The window has a pine tree outside, and gives lovely light.  There is a bookshelf with lots of gardening books and other books, and room for one chair.
Downstairs Double bedroom, across the hall from Bathroom

This is the downstairs bedroom, a double, which as two windows, each looking out on greenery and trees,  (and lots of birds).  This bedroom is conveniently located across the hallway from the bathroom.  There is a large desk and a bureau in this room, and a garment rack and bookshelf.
Large Bathroom with shower/tub, and washing machine

This is the one large bathroom in the house - obviously I need a better picture!  The shower/tub is large, fiberglass, and to the left of where I'm standing when I took the pix.  There are shelves full of towels and linens as well.  There is a washing machine in the corner beside the sink/cabinet, and drying racks for laundry (no dryer, but clothes dry remarkably fast in the summer on drying racks!).  The cabinet is stocked with soaps, first aid, dryer, paper, etc,

Also, I have my own well on the property and the water from all faucets is good clear drinking water.

Sunset View from Upstairs Large Bedroom

This picture was taken from the upstairs West facing window in the big room at the top of the stairs.  The land is Manana, the sun sets over the mainland, across the water.  This time of year, you can watch it setting over New Harbor Maine area.

On a clear night, from the upstairs windows you can see as many as 8 lighthouses along the main coast shining their beams across the water.  On July 4th, firework displays up and down the entire coast can be seen over the mainland in the distance.

Pictures of this gorgeous and inspiring place!

Monhegan Island is a place of extreme beauty and peace, located 12 miles off the Maine coast.  The ride on the ferry is an amazing experience, and once you set foot here, you’ll always want to come back!  My home is located in a private and unique area, between the village and the cliffs, high on Horns Hill.  It is literally a 5 minute walk from the house to get to either one.  Monhegan is about 1 1/4 miles long and 3/4 mile wide, and hosts 17 miles of hiking trails which lead through beautiful Maine woods out to high cliffs that run the length of the east side of the island. Two thirds of Monhegan is held in a natural preserve, to remain forever wild. During the Spring and Fall seasons, Monhegan is a destination for birdwatchers who come from around the world to witness the migration of many species of birds on their way north and south along the Eastern Flyway.  It's also a place where many artists have found inspiration for their artwork, as there is a pretty scene around every corner!

If you enlarge these pictures you will see the details of the rocks, the sea, and the crabs!
