The Charles House -  Monhegan Island Maine

Consider renting this beautiful home to stay with your family. The house has many amenities you won't find in most cottages on the island, and is in a private and quiet location.

Full Two story house with 4 bedrooms, 1 large bathroom

This year-round two story house offers many of the amenities you would expect at your own home; Linens and towels are provided, a stocked kitchen with lots of room to cook, wi fi, dvds, art on the walls, books, puzzles, games. It's a lovely and peaceful place to stay, whether traveling as a couple or part of a family group. The house is located at the top of Horn's Hill, in a quiet and private location on Monhegan, note: it's not located on the water, but it does have water views from upstairs.

Kitchen, door onto front Deck
The kitchen and living-room are connected, with a door to the deck located between them. The cabinets are filled with dishes, pots, pans and anything you'd need to cook up a fine meal!  The table in the picture is set for four, but there are two leaves that will extend to fit more people.  The cook stove is run with propane gas. The door opens onto a large deck that faces west, and there is a lovely private yard and deck-chairs.  It's lovely to leave the doors open on a beautiful day and let the breeze blow through the house.
Kitchen with Natural wood cabinets

Another view of the kitchen, with a pantry on the left with cupboards and drawers.   The island has a wonderful recycling program, so trash can be easily sorted within the appropriate cupboard.  I have a new fridge not shown in the picture, that is a larger model.

The Living room (open to the kitchen-pictured above) - the door to the deck is beside the couch.  The couch and chair are new, the chair is a swivel rocker and they are so comfortable!  There is a media cart beside the couch with a TV, DVD, and lots of animated movies for kids, music videos and a couple of family movies.  My antenna only reaches the local channels, and is not set up with dish-network services.  However, if you bring a computer, the wi-fi connection at the house is excellent and you can watch movies using your connection.

This is the left upstairs Full bedroom. There are four bedrooms in the house - one Full downstairs- 2 Full upstairs, and one King upstairs.
You can see gorgeous sunrises over the cliffs (Burnthead) out the window facing East, and a fabulous view of the entire Lighthouse and keeper's house out the North facing window.  There are bureaus in each room, as well as hanging garment racks.  There are handmade quilts on the beds.

This is a large bedroom upstairs, with a king sized bed.  There are lots of books, gardening books, coffee table books, and lots of children's books.  There is a great view of the lighthouse from the north facing window.

The opposite side of this large room (pictured below) offers another upstairs living/sitting room with a couch.  This room is located at the top of the stairs and you must enter this room to access the doors to the other two upstairs bedrooms, one to the left of the stairway and one to the right.

This is the opposite side of the Upstairs large bedroom with the king bed on other side of room.  A sitting area with lots of books, magazines, and the cabinet with the games, toys, puzzles and things to do if you happen to visit in inclement weather!

There is a large window that looks out over the water and the neighboring island Manana in the center of the room.  You can view some amazing sunsets from this West facing window, as well as several lighthouses glowing along the Maine shoreline in the distance.

This is a very small bedroom in the Southwest corner of the upstairs.  The full bed is new and very comfortable!  The window has a pine tree outside, and gives lovely light.  There is a bookshelf with lots of  books.

This is the downstairs bedroom, a double, which as two windows, each looking out on trees,  (and lots of birds).  This bedroom is conveniently located across the hallway from the bathroom.  There is a large desk and a bureau in this room, and a garment rack and bookshelf.

There is one large bathroom in the house, downstairs across the hall from the one downstairs full bedroom. The shower/tub is to the left out of the picture.  There are shelves with towels and linens provided.  There is a washing machine in the corner beside the sink/cabinet, and drying racks for laundry (no dryer, but clothes dry fast in the summer on drying racks!).

I have my own well on the property and the water from all faucets is good clear drinking water.

This is the hallway entrance.  The front door opens to the hallway and staircase, the door to the right at the bottom of the stairs leads to the bathroom.  The hallway is wide and easy to bring luggage in and out.  There is a small entrance deck that faces East and is a lovely spot to have your coffee in the morning, whereas the back full deck has sunshine all afternoon.   A lovely breeze is always present at the top of the hill, and there aren't many bugs.

This picture was taken from the upstairs West facing window in the big room at the top of the stairs.  The land is Manana Island, across the harbor from Monhegan, the sun sets over the mainland.  In the summer, you can watch it setting over New Harbor Maine area.

On a clear night, from the upstairs windows you can see as many as 8 lighthouses along the main coast shining their beams across the water.

Pictures of this gorgeous and inspiring place!

Monhegan Island is a place of extreme beauty and peace, located 12 miles off the Maine coast.  The ride on the ferry is an amazing experience, and once you set foot here, you’ll always want to come back!  My home is located in a private and unique area, between the village and the cliffs, high on Horns Hill.  It is literally a 5 minute walk from the house to get to either one.  Monhegan is about 1 1/4 miles long and 3/4 mile wide, and hosts 17 miles of hiking trails which lead through beautiful Maine woods out to high cliffs that run the length of the east side of the island. Two thirds of Monhegan is held in a natural preserve, to remain forever wild. During the Spring and Fall seasons, Monhegan is a destination for birdwatchers who come from around the world to witness the migration of many species of birds on their way north and south along the Eastern Flyway.  It's also a place where many artists have found inspiration for their artwork, as there is a pretty scene around every corner!

If you enlarge these pictures you will see the details of the rocks, the sea, and the crabs!
